Five ways to save money on groceries

Whether you’re a family of four or just trying to feed yourself, if you’re not mindful of how you’re food shopping, the receipts soon add up. We’ve compiled a list of 5 money-saving hacks that will help those shopping trips hurt your wallet a little less.

Plan your meals

You may think it’s easier to just browse the aisles and pick out the things you (think you) need, but this type of shopping will actually take you longer and could be more stressful. Have a plan of attack before you go about your food shop – that way you’ll know exactly what meals you’re cooking in the next few days and exactly what you’ll need to make them.

Don’t deviate from this list and it should help reduce your food wastage too.

If you have a local market or even a single stall near you, you should definitely take a look. I have been known to get 6 ripe and ready-to-eat avocados for £1! Unbelievable stuff.

They will have a wide range of fruit and veg available and it’ll all be fresh. Sure, it may look a little uglier than the stuff you get in the supermarkets, but they taste just as good, maybe even better.

Bulking is best

If you eat a lot of something, you should always try to go for the big bags and not the single portion ones. Pasta, meat, potatoes etc – buying in bulk will save you money vs. the smaller portions (providing you eat it all!).

That being said, cooking in bulk isn’t a bad shout either. Take soup for example, you can make a big batch, put some in your fridge for the next few days and portion the rest out and stick it in the freezer. That way you’ll only need to cook once and just heat up at the other meal times.

Ditch the brands

You may think you’re insanely attached to your particular brand of tea or biscuits or crisps, but branching out could surprise you. Many of the branded stuff you’ve never heard of or supermarket’s own brands are just as good as the premium stuff! Pick a product you religiously buy and challenge yourself to try different, cheaper brands and see if you can taste the difference. If you really want to be unbiased, get someone to do a blind taste-test with you!

Surf the sales

It’s easy to get hooked into the offers and buy things you normally wouldn’t because it’s on special. If you really want to save money, you should only buy stuff in the sales that you would normally buy. But when they are on sale, stock up for future use and you’ll make the savings last longer.
