Clean your kitchen like a pro

Your kitchen is where you prepare your family meals and you want to make sure it’s not housing any harmful bacteria. While you could just buy a kitchen cleaner, it may not be doing a good enough job. Or you could actually end up damaging parts of your kitchen! So here are some tips for safely cleaning the entirety of your kitchen.

(Not!) Scratching the surface

Kitchen worktops can be a breeding ground for bacteria. They come into contact with everything from dirty dishes, grubby hands, raw food and shopping bags. Plus. if you don’t change your kitchen sponge regularly, giving them a wipe round may not be enough to rid your surfaces of germs.

If you have porcelain or ceramic worktops, prevent damage by washing them with hot soapy water. Combine warm water and vinegar to get tough stains to shift.

Stainless steel worktops can be prone to rust. Mix cream of tartar with a squeeze of lemon juice to make a paste and rub this into rusty areas. Leave it for a few hours and then wipe away to reveal rust-free surfaces.

To remove things like grubby fingerprints and get a streak-free shine, use baking soda and a cloth.

Everything but the kitchen sink

Make a DIY cleaner from baking soda and essential oils of your choosing. Wet your sink and sprinkle the mixture liberally around your sink. Use a squirt or two of dish soap and scrub using a hard-bristled brush. Then simply rinse the sink and it’ll be left with a good-as-new shine and free from bacteria.

Washing the dishwasher

We can really take our dishwashers for granted – they’re such a time- and effort-saver that we forget what our lives were like before we had them. If you want to avoid your dishwasher breaking down, it’s a good idea to do a regular clean and make sure it’s free from blockages.

Firstly, remove the bottom rack and check there isn’t any food (or long lost cutlery!) around the rotator at the bottom. You can pour a cup of vinegar and then sprinkle on some baking soda to help dislodge any grime that’s built up. After this step, you should run the dishwasher empty on a quick, hot cycle. When that’s done, wipe round the inside with a microfiber cloth or kitchen roll.

Now you’re cooking with gas

The insides of our ovens can get pretty grimy, so it’s a good idea to give it a deep clean at least once a month. You can make a DIY cleaner with just three ingredients that will do the job nicely.

Take 250ml of water and mix in baking soda until you make a paste, then add a tablespoon of dish soap. Dip a sponge into the paste and spread it all over the inside of your oven. Let it sit for about 15-30 minutes, then get a clean sponge and wipe it clean before rinsing thoroughly with warm water. (You may need to repeat this last step to make sure all the grime is gone.)

Micro-wave goodbye to food splatters

It’s easy to neglect cleaning your microwave – out of sight, out of mind. But it’s pretty gross to think that you will continue to cook your food in there amongst all the food spills and splatters.

Cleaning it doesn’t need to be a chore. Simply fill a measuring jug with hot tap water, cut a lemon into quarters and add it to the water. Place the jug in your microwave and set the timer to 5 minutes, letting it run until the water inside is boiling (it should take between 3 and 5 minutes). The steam will loosen all those cooked-on stains and dissolve any grease.

Once it’s done, take the glass tray out and wash it in the sink and take a microfiber cloth and wipe round the inside of your microwave. If there is still some dirt that needs shifting, use a bit of kitchen cleaner to help you finish the job.
