Introducing the video doorbell

Some smart home technology can seem a bit unnecessary – nice to have but not extremely useful and you can certainly live without it. But this revolutionary product can solve a real-life problem and honestly, I don’t know why I haven’t bought one already.

Why it’s a good idea

If you’re security-conscious or a regular online-shopper, you’re going to love the video doorbell. It combines a doorbell with a motion sensor and camera to allow you to receive a live video feed on your smartphone whenever there’s someone at your door.

That means if you’re waiting for a delivery and you aren’t home, you can instruct the courier where to leave the package and physically see where they put it. If someone suspicious comes to your door, you’ll have a recording as evidence and can alert them of this so that your house remains secure. Or if a neighbour pops round and you’ve gone out, you can have a quick chat with them and arrange to meet later. It really is a useful gadget.

How it works

The video doorbell looks much like any other doorbell, except that it has a camera integrated. When the motion sensor detects movement in the parameters you’ve indicated, you’ll get a live video feed streamed to the device of your choosing (smartphone, laptop, tablet or PC). It starts a video call between you and the visitor (you can see and hear them, they can only hear you), meaning you can greet visitors even when you’re out.

The reviews

Generally the reviews are very good: 3.7 out of 5 stars on Amazon, 3.5 out of 5 stars on trustedreviews.com, 4 out of 5 stars on TechHive.com.

In terms of video doorbells, it’s the most popular on the market. It has an appealing modern design,  is easy to install (can be hardwired or run off a rechargeable battery) and has an app where you can control its settings. It’s also weather-resistant, meaning you don’t have to worry about keeping it under cover or out of direct sunlight.

Moving onto the cons… the main drawback of the Ring video doorbell is that it needs to be supported by a subscription to cloud storage for the video feed. You get the first month for free, but after that you need to pay £2.50 a month, or £24.99 annually to keep your recordings stored.

Another point is that it’s obviously a gadget stuck to the outside of your house and therefore has a chance that it could be stolen. Ring have a nice gesture to counteract these fears – if your doorbell is stolen, they’ll replace it for you free of charge, so long as you file a police report.

It’s also worth mentioning you need a strong Wi-Fi signal for the doorbell to work.
