Unusual things you can put in your dishwasher

Many households now have a dishwasher and they’re fast becoming a kitchen staple, especially for those with big families. While we all know they’re great for cleaning your crockery, there are a few things you could put through the dishwasher that you’d have never imagined. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most unusual thing you can put in your dishwasher.

Converse shoes in washing basket

Shoes

If you’ve ever found yourself caught in thick mud, you might have ended up putting your shoes through the washing machine. While this works well enough, there’s always the risk that your shoes will be damaged in some way, especially if you’re into fast fashion and the shoes aren’t built to last.

But did you know you can also put them through the dishwasher for a clean? Canvas shoes like Converse or Vans, flips flops and dare we say it; jelly shoes and crocs can all go in the dishwasher. You can even put wellies through, although you want to check they’re not too tall that it stops the arm spinning inside your dishwasher.

Make-up brushes and hairbrushes

We pull clumps of hair out of our brushes but do we ever wash them? I’m definitely guilty of neglecting my hairbrush. The same can be said for make-up brushes – I definitely don’t wash mine as often as I should. There is a simple way… you’ve guessed it, putting them through the dishwasher! Stick them in the cutlery basket and put them through a cycle and it’ll remove any caked on make-up or old dirt. Make sure you remove any clumps of hair from your hairbrushes before you put them in, or you could end up clogging the filter in your dishwasher and causing it to break down.

Car parts

This has to be the wackiest one. Yes, you read that right; you can put car parts through your dishwasher! But before you go dismantling your engine, we mean the easy to remove kind, like your number plate, removable cup holders and your hub caps.

Vegetables

If you’re prepping a Sunday roast dinner and have a ton of vegetables to wash, save yourself from achy fingers and put them through a cycle in the dishwasher. Put them on a quick rinse and it’ll be perfectly hygienic, saving you time to do some other prep while they’re washing.
